How do HVLS fans work
HVLS fans are becoming more and more popular as a cost-effective cooling and/or heating solution for warehouses, agricultural buildings, airplane hangars, theaters, and other large commercial and industrial spaces. Many people are curious to know exactly how they can make such big spaces so comfortable — while also helping the bottom line, no less.
How HVLS fans work
Due to the larger fan size, HVLS fans don’t require high speeds to move air. The slower, steadier speed and longer fan props push large volumes of air from the ceiling and down to the floor. The air moves horizontally until reaching a column or wall, which then projects airflow upward and sideways. When the air rises again, it is pushed down again by the HVLS fan, creating continuous airflow through the space.
This process is called evaporative cooling, which is the principle that explains why a person feels cooler in a breeze. The fan does not actually change the physical temperature of the air flowing down, but will naturally evaporate moisture generated by processes, from livestock, humid weather, or other sources. Humidity makes the air feel warmer, so removing it from the air ultimately creates a more comfortable environment.
Commercial HVLS fans also work to evenly distribute warm air during the winter. When heating a building, there will be different temperature zones within a space localized near heating ducts and up near ceilings. Warm air rises while cold air falls, making it cooler near the floor. An HVLS fan pushes the warm rising air back down and mixes it with the cooler air to create a more evenly distributed temperature across the facility.
Under ideal conditions, an 8 feet (2.4 m) diameter fan produces a floor jet of air approximately 36 inches (910 mm) deep. A 24 feet (7.3 m) diameter fan produces a floor jet 108 inches (2,700 mm) deep, tall enough to engulf a human standing on the floor or a cow, its initial development purpose.
